The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed support in the activities lined up for the National Safe Work Month celebrated every October of each year.

Kate Carnell AO, CEO of the Australian Chamber said the Safe Work Month is a great opportunity for businesses, workers, and the community to improve work health and safety.

“By working together we can all improve health and safety in the workplace. National Safe Work Month is a time to highlight improvements made over the past year and look for ways to make things even better. An improved safety culture benefits everyone.

“This year’s National Safe Work Month theme is ‘Be safe. Be healthy. Because….’. This gives everyone a chance to think about why safety is important to them. Employers strive to help staff be safe and be healthy because it makes good business sense.”

Ms Carnell encouraged all businesses to take part in the activities for this month.

“I encourage every business to mark National Safe Work Month in a way that is meaningful for them,” she said.

“Safe Work Australia is hosting free online seminars during the month to showcase the latest thinking, innovation, research and developments in work health and safety. Business operators and their staff can watch the seminars live or access them later from the Safe Work Australia website. The interactive seminars are accompanied by case studies, research and date, and include a chance to ask questions.

“The Australian Chamber and its member organisations have long played a leadership role in policies and advice that support good business practices.

“There is still much work to be done to improve work health and safety. Last year, 188 people were killed at work in Australia. Each death carries an enormous emotional cost for the family, friends and colleagues of those involved.”
